Evan Wiederspan awarded “Commended Student”

Evan Wiederspan is a “Commended Student” in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program

The principal, Pat Russell, of Cedar Park Christian’s Mountlake Terrace Campus announced today that Evan Wiederspan has been named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation,” commented an NMSC spokesperson. “The young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program. We sincerely hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement.”

Families love Friday Night Movies

Friday Night Movie originated in 2003 as an opportunity to provide school unity and family fun! Over the years it has served our Parent Student Organization as a means for campus improvements, classroom funds and specific family needs. Mountlake Terrace Campus Annual Community Service Day

Over 50 student volunteers, 6 parent volunteers, and 10 staff volunteers came out to support The Mountlake Terrace Campus Community Service Day at 5 different locations. The Lynnwood Campus was blessed by 26 junior high and high school students and 6 parent or staff volunteers who shoveled and raked 100 yards of playground chips (paid for by the Lynnwood Campus Magazine/Cookie Dough sale).  Everyone worked hard and managed to get the job done in 2 ½ hours!

Cross Country Scores Big At State Meet

The Cedar Park Christian Cross Country Team had a fantastic season this year. The girls’ team finished in 6th place overall at the state meet. It was wonderful to see the girls finish so strong and come together as a team. Senior standout and cornerstone leader for the team, Sally Larson, was crowned as the individual state champion. Sally’s hard work and determination paid off in a big way as she was in a close race and proved too fast for rivals from the Northwest School and King’s. Sally credits her success in developing and understanding of how to “race” and dedicating this season to running for the Lord. Sally has been recruited by several colleges including NCAA division 1 universities.

Boy’s senior standout Kyle Cole finished 4th in the state meet this season. Kyle had an incredible race and was an inspiration to his teammates this season with his relentless work ethic. Kyle also has been contacted by colleges to compete at the university level and is currently weighing his options. He is also excited about this season’s track can field season as he get to compete in his favorite running events in the 1600 and 800 meter races.

Operation Spirit of Christmas

Cedar Park Christian School proudly supports Operation Spirit of Christmas for the 10th year!  Elementary students donated hundreds of stockings full of toys for children of U.S. Military personnel in active duty service.  Students work together to form a human chain to load boxes of filled stockings onto a military delivery vehicle.

Elementary Principal for the Day

Mr. Adam Lynch, Elementary Principal, and Jacob, Principal for a Day.  The two principals had a fun day together in the office sending emails, making announcements, and enjoying lunch.  Jacob’s parents purchased the Principal for a Day experience at the auction.  Thank you, Jacob.  You make a great principal!

Seattle Children’s Theatre Field Trip

On Ocotber 23, the first, second, and third grade students attended a perfomance of a play put on by the Seattle Children’s Theatre, The Cat in the Hat.  We had a wonderful time and learned to be good listeners as we watched the hilarious story of a cat who dresses in a striped top hat.  The Cat brings fun and harmless chaos to a household of two young children, brother and sister, one rainy day while their mother leaves them unattended.  The Cat performs all sorts of wacky tricks–the Cat at one point balances a teacup, some milk, a cake, three books, the Fish, a rake, a toy boat, a toy man, a red fan, and his umbrella while he is on a ball–to amuse the children.  Then, the Cat gets a box from outside.  Inside the box are two creatures named Thing One and Thing Two, who begin to fly kites in the house.  The children eventually capture the Things with a net and bring the Cat under control.  To make up for the chaos he has caused, he cleans up the house on his way out, disappearing a second before the mother arrives.  Our students enjoyed the story told in rhyme as much as many other children have enjoyed reading The Cat in the Hat book.  With our emphasis on reading in the early grades, it was an excellent activity for our students to experience the joy of books and stories that encourage and build reading skills.

Following the play, we hiked over to the Seattle Center House for a sack lunch.  The weather was beautiful so afterward, we walked to the International Fountain and the kids enjoyed some time running around it.  We ended our field trip with group pictures.  An amazing time was had by all.

A Parent’s Perspective

“Our daughter was in the local public school last year.  She was a year behind in reading and having the hardest time with some classmates.  She often got teased for her faith and we had to have some hard talks about the world.  Most of her evenings were full of tears and that hopeless feeling of it never getting better.  She lost her drive and was no longer excited to go to school.  As a parent, it broke my heart.

I knew our daughter needed to be in a better place where she could grow and get the help she needed.  I looked into Cedar Park Christian schools, and specifically, the Lynnwood campus.  I came to the open house in the spring, and as I was sitting listening to the presentation, I started to tear up because I knew this was where our daughter needed to be.

I made the switch, and I am amazed at the progress our daughter has made, not just academically, but spiritually as well. She has met new friends and she is even excited to go to school again!

The impact of my choice to switch her here has been so great and I’ve seen her confidence grow so much that her demeanor is different and everyone around her can really see the change.  This school is really special and cares about each student and building up their character. The teachers and staff always go the extra mile and take interest in the kids and their passions…it has really made our daughter feel so special.”

MLT High School Retreat

Monday, Sept. 17th, marks the beginning of our annual high school retreat, which is held at Cedar Springs Camp, in Lake Stevens. Seniors will be leaving CPCS on Monday and the juniors, sophomores and freshmen will be joining them on Tuesday. All students will be returning back at the school on Wednesday, Sept. 19th. The cost of the retreat will be added to your family monthly invoice to cover the cost of the camp ($99 for Seniors and $75 for 9th - 11th grade). All high school students are required to attend. Be looking for a separate email to be sent to you with additional information and forms that are required for this retreat.

Soccer team sports new look

 The 2012 Soccer Season begins Thursday, September 6th!

Following the practice Coach Schampier would like to meet with, at least one of the parents for a brief informational meeting. See you at the practice field on Bothell-Everett Hwy.

Practices will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
