Crosstown Middle School League Basketball Guidelines 2010-2011
Hosting Home Games Recommendations:
1) Provide a room for visiting teams to have pre-game, halftime and post-game meetings if needed. The room should be clean, have a dozen chairs, and a black/white board. All valuables should be carried to team bench and not left in room.
2) Scorer's Table is vital for all to have an enjoyable experience. Adults are preferred on the score clock and home scorebook so that students are not put in the position of determining the outcome of a game.
3) A safety check of the facility should include run-out areas, padding of jagged edges and protruding objects, as well as minimizing any other foreseeable risks.
4) All games require P.N.B.O.A. Officials, and two should be ordered. If one shows, you may start the game with one.
5) All schools should have adequate court length and width. In addition, each hosting team should have a three point line on court (you may use court tape if needed).
Visiting Team Responsibility:
Please arrive in order to be dressed and on time court 15 minutes prior to tip-off, yet please do not arrive more than 30 minutes early.
CTMSL Game Rules:
Uniforms: Home team should wear light colored jerseys (visiting team in darks) and is responsible to utilize light colored pennies if referee requests. Basketball numbering is preferred (digits no higher than 5).
Pre-Game Warm-up: Maximum of 15 minutes (Official will determine minimum if needed).
Game Time: Two, 20 minute running halves. Clock stops on timeouts and free throws. Clock stops last two minutes of each half on the whistle.
Halftime: Maximum of 8 minutes (may be shortened).
Overtime: 3 Minute period, clock stops on whistle (no running clock).
Shot Clock: There is no shot clock for girls' and boys' games.
Time Outs: 2 Full (one minute), 2, 30 second time outs available per game.
Overtime games award one additional fulltime out to each team.
Teams may play any type of defense (man-to-man, zone, combination, etc.).
When Ahead by 15 or more points: No extended, pressure defense, including
backcourt pressing. Teams may only "pickup" at frontcourt 3 point line of opponent. One ball enters that area, you may trap but not outside of three point line. In addition, leading teams should not fast break (3 on 2, 2 on 1, etc.).
Ethical Considerations:
A victory of 30 or more points is a violation of the league blowout rule. Both coaches should call their athletic director within 24 hours to discuss game.
How to Limit Blowouts:
· When the score reaches 15+ - even in the first half – consider making substitutions.
· Utilize a spread offense which focuses on fundamentals and encourages multiple touches (10-15+) and ball reversals.
· You dictate what shots will be taken. Uncontested lay-ups out of a halfcourt offense can be taken. Dribble drives to the basket would be a poor choice.
· Any three point shot attempts should get the player to the bench for the duration of the game if the coach truly respects the ideals of sportsmanship.
· Any time a fast break is developing, the coach needs to stop it even if it means taking a timeout during it.
· Defensively, consider a tight zone (one if not both feet in the paint).
· Playing time: These are the games to play your bench players far more than your starters. If you are ahead by 25+ at halftime, consider sitting multiple starters.
· Interact positively with the officials to remind them of our league guidelines to help monitor the blowout situation.
