ON-LINE ASSIGNMENTS:

English students will be utilizing several on-line tools to complete various assignments. Cedar Park Christian Schools has a MOODLE website that we will use for DOL lesson, literature studies, and downloading various assignments for students to easily access. The CPCS MOODLE website address is: www.communovation.com. We will use Edublogs for maintaining student blogging assignments. The web address for the CPCS Mountlake Terrace English blog is: www.englishwithmissgerber.com. Individual student blog addresses will be determined within the first few weeks of school.

MEETING WITH MISS GERBER:

Parents:

Mornings are very busy for many teachers. Here at Cedar Park Christian High School's Mountlake Terrace Campus, the teachers meet every morning for prayer and devotions at 7:35 a.m. This time will last at least until 7:55 a.m. The time before staff prayer/devotions is usually quite busy with morning preparations, photocopying, etc. If you need to see me with questions and/or concerns, please leave the mornings for dire emergencies. I do want to talk with you, but I'd like to give you my full attention. Mornings don't allow for that. I can meet with parents/students after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 2:50 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. I can usually stay late if need be. Scheduled after-school appointments are the best. You can email me to set up an appointment. Thank you for your understanding.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT. . .

The following information regarding absences and make-up work is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY without exception:

(1) Assignments and tests missed during an absence MUST BE MADE UP. It is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY ON THE FIRST DAY BACK TO CLASS to find out what was missed (check the board and course file for handouts). The standard time frame is one day per each day absent to complete the missing work. When the work is turned in or the missing test is taken, it MUST be turned in with LATE assignment sheet. No points will be deducted on absent work unless it's turned in later than required by the teacher. No credit will be awarded for any work missed as the result of an unexcused absence.

(2) Any assignment assigned on the last day of school prior to your absence (unless not yet due) or was due during your absence MUST be presented to the teacher on the FIRST DAY of your return.

(3) Student athletes are required to submit all assignments due on a day missed because of an early dismissal or missed days due to athletica competitions BEFORE THE SCHEDULED DISMISSAL / ABSENCE. Student athletes in English classes occurrin after departure time are expected to submit all assignments due that day before they leave campus.

(4) "I can't take the test because I . . ." -- Sorry . . . You are fully expected to take any test that you knew, or should have known, would take place (unless previously arranged with the teacher).

GRADING LATE WORK:

Students that turn in late work should not expect that late work to be graded immediately. My priority is to grade the work turned in on time first. Once that is graded, I will work on grading late work. When students do not make turning in assignments on time a priority, I will not prioritize grading late work first. I will do my best to grade the late work, but it will not be my first priority. Thank you for your understanding in this policy.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' INDEPENDENT READING SELECTIONS:

International students are NOT to read books for their outside reading assignments/essays/projects in their native language. International students are to read books written in ENGLISH. This is ENGLISH class; therefore, the ENGLISH language is required. Thank you.

COLORFUL LANGUAGE IN CLASSROOM LITERATURE SELECTIONS:

In careful consideration of the novels chosen to read as class studies, several novels contain language that, while used in these pieces of literature, is inappropriate for students to use presently today. We will spend time in class addressing the issue of diction (vocabulary and syntax) chosen for novels, and we will delve into reasoning for the author's inclusion of such language. I am aware of the sensitivity of questionable language and will take measures in class to help students understand why authors choose to include language of such magnitude. Please talk with me if you have any questions and/or concerns. Thank you.
